CEClang.63 TITLE: JUST SANDWICHES AUTHOR: Sheryl Weinberg, Southeast Island School District Ketchikan, AK GRADE LEVEL/SUBJECT: UE-JH, Language Arts ( Level 2 ) OVERVIEW: This lesson is useful as a prewriting activity. Sandwiches have likely been a dietary mainstay of your students. Likewise, most of them have some experience with eating in a restaurant. This lesson will ask students to design sandwiches for all meals, courses, and occasions. Student Motivation: Say to the class: "Owning a restaurant has been your lifelong dream -- which is about to come true! Realizing that your spot will have to be special to survive amongst the competition, you hit on an idea that will set your eatery apart -- JUST SANDWICHES! Regardless of the course, from appetizers to desserts, each dish will be in sandwich form. It's time to begin dreaming up each tasty treat. . ." Problem: Student will list or draw many, different, and unusual sandwich creations. Basic ingredients should be identified for each idea. ACTIVITIES AND PROCEDURES: 1. Given ten minutes, small groups of students will brainstorm sandwich creations. 2. Each group will share their ideas with the class. Ideas will then be categorized. 3. Students will collectively identify favorite sandwiches. Each group will develop a detailed, illustrated menu entry for one of the favorite sandwiches. OPTIONAL: Ingredients will be collected for "favorite" sandwich construction. Each group will make their sandwich and share it with the class. Evaluation: MANY - Total number of sandwich ideas. DIFFERENT - Categories of sandwiches. UNUSUAL - One-of-a-kind sandwiches.
