TITLE: Land Before Time AUTHOR: Bonnie Gossett, NV GRADE LEVEL/SUBJECT: 4-6; grade oral language handicapped OVERVIEW: This is a high interest language processing and comprehension unit. Needed is the movie Land Before Time, a TV, and a VCR. This was used as the introduction to the Interact Dinosaur Unit. PURPOSE: To teach vocabulary and language comprehension OBJECTIVES: Students will be able to recognize and use new vocabulary. Students will be able to follow the general sequence and content of the story. ACTIVITIES AND PROCEDURES: The students will view the movie in its entirety. Then the movie is shown in segments with a multiple choice test that follows each section. A final test is then given about 2 days after the finish of the viewing of the movie. TYING IT ALL TOGETHER: The students really get involved because of the high interest of the content. Land Before Time leads well into the Interact Dinosaur Unit. Language work becomes painless with the use of a movie versus a book, because many of this population has problems with reading also.
